When you're booking a unit, you'll be asked to choose between climate-controlled and drive-up. It's not a trick question or an upsell - they genuinely serve different jobs, and the right pick comes down to two things: what you're storing, and how you'll be loading it.
What climate control actually does
A climate-controlled unit sits inside a conditioned building that holds a steady temperature and humidity range around the clock. In a place like Raleigh, that second part - humidity - is the one that matters. Humid air is what warps solid wood, clouds the glass on electronics, mildews upholstery and fabric, and curls photographs and documents. If you're storing anything you'd be upset to see damaged, climate control is cheap insurance.
Store climate-controlled: wood furniture, mattresses, electronics, artwork, important documents, musical instruments, leather, and anything with sentimental value.
What drive-up is great at
A drive-up unit lets you pull your vehicle right up to a wide roll-up door - no stairs, no hallways, no long carries. That makes it the fastest possible way to load and unload heavy or bulky items, which is exactly what you want during an actual move. Back the truck up, roll the door up, and you're unloading in minutes.
Drive-up shines for: an active move where speed matters, garage overflow, tools and equipment, patio furniture, seasonal gear, and business inventory you're pulling from often.
The simple rule
Ask yourself: would a hot, humid week bother the things I'm storing? If yes, go climate-controlled. If the contents are rugged and you mostly care about loading fast and getting in and out quickly, drive-up is perfect. Plenty of people split the difference - a climate-controlled unit for the sensitive things and a drive-up for the workhorse items.
You don't have to choose blind
Several of our sizes are available as either type, and every unit is month-to-month, so you're never locked in. If you start with one and realize you need the other, switching is easy. Browse both on the Units & Pricing page, where the live availability shows you exactly what's open right now.
